Considering closing down shop - also a change in International Shipping policy

Posted by Athey Moravetz on

First off - as long as the site is up, I'm taking orders, and I will fill every order I get, so if you're reading this, and the site is up - it's up.  But this is notice that I'm considering shutting things down, and if I do it, it's likely to happen before Christmas.

Basically 10 months out of the year, I barely get any orders.  This is absolutely not my full-time job.

But I do have a full-time job, which means that the process of printing cutters, cleaning, prepping, and packaging them, is not a high priority for me.  This means that things get sent out pretty slow.

On average, it's a solid two weeks between an order being placed, and me getting it shipped out.  I know this isn't good, but I've got a job, and two kids, and plenty of responsibilities that take priority in my schedule, and I just can't find a way to rework things so that I can get these orders out faster.

Even though I get so few orders.

So why shut it down?

Well, it's the other two months out of the year that I'm worried about.

For the month of November and December, the volume of orders I get skyrockets.  It's like the world remembers that cookies and holidays are cool, and they all order at once.

November and December are also super-busy months for the rest of my life, so adding the load that comes with holiday orders, on top of all of that, is just exhausting.

Plus, I could never really keep up with those holiday cookie cutter orders during Nov and Dec even back when I didn't have a full-time job to take priority.  Which I do now.

Last year, I don't think a single order placed after December 5th arrived before the New Year.  It was just too much for one person to do.

The reality is that most people do not read these notices.  Most people don't even see the notice on the CHECK OUT PAGE that says the turn-around is TWO WEEKS.  Most people are accustomed to Amazon with it's 2-day Prime shipping turn-around.  Most people also don't plan very far ahead, and cookie cutters are often purchased for special events that are Time-Sensitive.

This combination of factors results in people being disappointed in how long it takes for orders to arrive.

So that's where I'm at right now with all of that.  I'm honestly considering shutting it all down - this site doesn't exactly earn me much of an income anymore anyway, so I'm not sure it's worth the bother.

Beyond that issue, in a totally different realm entirely - the matter of International Shipping is also something I need to re-evaluate.  So if I do keep the site going, I'm still probably going to stop shipping outside of the US.

It used to be that I could ship something to most other countries for around $7.  Now I'm lucky if it's only $14.  When we're talking about a $6 cookie cutter, that's a hard pill to swallow.

I don't usually charge people the same shipping price I pay.  You guys pay a different rate by country, but it's not as high as what I pay to actually ship it.  I eat a portion of that price, and the amount I eat is getting bigger all the time.  It's made it cost-ineffective to ship internationally.  So whether I keep the shop up, or close it down - shipping outside of the US is probably going away, and soon.

Consider this a heads up.  if you want something by Christmas, you'd best order it now, because I'm not going to wait too much longer before deciding how to proceed.
